Statistically, around half of all people require orthodontic treatment for malocclusion and misaligned teeth. The position of these patients’ teeth can often cause discomfort, speech problems, and significantly impact self-esteem.
While many younger patients and teens don’t mind traditional braces and are in fact often excited to join their peers in orthodontic correction, many adults and professionals would rather not have such obvious metal devices.
Mark R. Markgraf, DDS, offers Invisalign® clear aligners to individuals who wish to correct their dental alignment with a more discreet solution. Contact our Punta Gorda Practice to schedule a consultation with our friendly and knowledgeable team.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign is best for patients with mild to moderate malocclusion. After Dr. Markgraf has examined your dental structure and determined that you are eligible for clear aligners, a digital scan is taken of your dentition, which is used to create custom aligner trays that perfectly fit your teeth.
The scan is even uploaded to software that can digitally reconstruct your teeth, showing you an accelerated view of your alignment process, including what your beautiful new smile will look like when treatment is completed.
You will wear multiple trays throughout the process, as Invisalign trays are only worn for two weeks at a time. As the aligners straighten your teeth over the course of the treatment, they must be changed every two weeks to ensure optimal pressure is always applied to the teeth, with each tray slightly straighter than the last.
This treatment can last anywhere from one to two years, depending on the patient.
Comfort Without Compromise
There are numerous advantages to Invisalign clear aligners over traditional metal braces, the most prominent being the discreet nature of the treatment. While not actually invisible, clear aligners are formed to the teeth, with no extraneous pieces that stick out and draw attention to the smile.
Convenience is also a major factor for many. Metal braces have many crevices and contours in which food can get stuck. This also makes daily oral cleaning habits difficult, as those same wires and contours can prevent brushes and floss from reaching the places that need it most.
With Invisalign, although the trays must be worn at least 22 hours each day, they can be easily removed for meals and oral hygiene. This has the added bonus of allowing you to eat all of your favorite foods with no dentist-recommended dietary restrictions.
